Wild Ideas

Wild Ideas was born in 2014 out of a young couple’s search to get back to the roots. They chose Tiruvannamalai, the Hindu pilgrimage town in Tamil Nadu dedicated to Lord Shiva, as their home — and the place where they would begin work on sustainable rural livelihood projects.

What started with two women has grown, over the course of a decade, into a self-sustaining rural enterprise of nearly a hundred. Every woman who works here comes from a disadvantaged background. Every product that leaves their workshop carries her name in some quiet way — her wages, her dignity, her growing confidence.

Wild Ideas makes over a hundred different products — from cold-process soaps and herbal hair oils to palm-leaf baskets, vadams, podis, and home cleaners. All handcrafted, using either certified organic ingredients or natural forest produce gathered with care. There are no factories, no industrial shortcuts. The recipes are old. The methods are slow.

What sets Wild Ideas apart isn’t just what they make — it’s how they make a community. The Education Sponsorship Program puts eighty-seven of their children through school, supported by urban sponsors. Twice a year, the women travel together on road trips across India to learn the geography and culture of the country they live in. Through Wheels of Freedom, they’re taught to ride bicycles and mopeds — small acts of independence that quietly transform lives.
